3 tips family caregivers should consider when choosing which home care agency to work for

11/20/2023

Some things to ask an agency before you accept a position:

  1. Make sure that they are contacted with your loved ones home care provider: Whether that is VA,  or a  Long term care insurance company, Medicare or  Medicaid. If they do not hold a contract with your loved ones insurance then you will not be able to be paid for the care you provide.
  2. Ask them what they will be paying you. This may seem taboo but as you are deciding which agency to work with it is important to know this.
  3. Ask them what training/certification is required and also ask if they would be paying for it.

Bonus Tip: Ask them if they have qualified caregivers in your area who can provide respite for you and your loved one. Or if not are they willing to work on hiring someone for this purpose.

Here’s an important negotiating tool:

When it comes to family caregivers agencies do not have to worry about you being late, calling out, not showing up etc.

If anything, hiring a family caregiver (especially live in) is easier for the agency.

So definitely use that to your advantage in the hiring process.
